Motivational Monday: The Value of Time
Let's talk a little today about time.
I found this video back in September 2009 and I enjoyed it so much that I copied it over to save in my blog. I had it saved in my hundreds of drafts and just rediscovered it today.
It continues to “wow” me.
One of my most favorite sayings that I repeat to myself on a daily basis is
“The days are long but the years are short.”
I wish I knew who to credit it to.
That simple 9 word sentence reminds me to avoid letting the “feel” of having endless time during the day allow me to watch years pass by without having made the biggest and BEST impact upon those around me possible.
How are you using your milliseconds today to make an impact on those around you? What are you doing today to make the web and the world a better place?
And, at every moment of the day, remember to ask yourself “Is this the best use of my time right now?”
For instance:
- If you're sitting on the floor playing peek-a-boo with your toddler, the answer is a resounding “YES”.
- If you're working on something that directly makes you money, the answer is probably “yes”.
- If you're wandering aimlessly on YouTube, Facebook, or are playing Farmville, the answer may be “no”.
Regrets suck. At the end of my life, I hope to have as few as I possibly can.
Please share your thoughts.
Warmly,
Nicole
PS. Also think about this video. If you can create a video like this that touches people, it could be a heckuva marketing message, too. 😉

January 17, 2011 at 1:43 pmHi Nik, Thank you very much for sharing this video. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it or something similar before, but we should watch this every single day.
One thing I’ve learned from you and my other wonderful mentors, Nik, is that time is even more valuable than money. You can earn back money, but you can never get back your time.
Every evening, I perform a consciousness examen: I review my day to see how I’ve spent it, what blessings I should be grateful for, but may have missed; what I did that I need to ask forgiveness for; and how I can do better the next day. I highly recommend it!

January 17, 2011 at 1:45 pm“Regrets suck” You summed it up right there with that comment, Nicole.
I have seen this video before, but it’s been a while and the reminder has come at the perfect time for me.
Thanks,
Peggy

January 17, 2011 at 3:06 pmI credit that saying to you, Nicole. 😀
And, just FYI… this kind of video and message didn’t used to make me cry, but it does now. The years will do that to a person because the truth of the video hits home harder and harder as time goes by.
This was probably one of the best 1:55 minutes I spent today. Thanks for sharing. Now, I’ve gotta go blow my nose and get back to work. sniff sniff
Love ya!

January 18, 2011 at 6:47 amI definitely agree with Patti, some of the best 125 seconds I am spending today. Time is one of the few truly finite resources in our lives and something we can’t get back or buy more of.
“The days are long but the years are short” is particularly resonating with me since my little girl is turning 8 on Thursday. Unbelievable, it feels like I just gave birth to her last week.
Even though there are days when I could use a few more hours of quite time to work, and it becomes very challenging to get much done when school is out, I am grateful that I’m in a position where I can be at school every afternoon to pick her up or be here when school is out for almost a week because of snow.

January 18, 2011 at 7:26 amWow Nicole, that was a great reminder that every moment is precious and we need to make each and every one of them count. Thanks for the video, needed it this morning when I’m trying to work and my grandson is pulling on my arm to come see what he is doing. Guess I’m gonna go see what he is doing with an new attitude. ;^) Big hug!

January 18, 2011 at 7:49 amGreat post and reminder that every second of every day is one we will never get back. I learned over the past several years from the loss of both my in-laws, my father and a grandson that each second should be treasured. Every day I try to spend a little time with my newest granddaughter (who like her brother, has been diagnosed with an incurable genetic disorder and a short life span).
I do something everyday for my business, even if it is just responding to an email. I take time each day to enjoy my family and my pets.
Thank you, Nicole, for reminding us to value time.

January 18, 2011 at 2:29 pmThat’s a beautiful video and a great reminder. I’m really just starting to learn the time lesson…wish I had learned it sooner.
Thanks for sharing and God bless,

January 19, 2011 at 9:11 amTime management has been a hot topic lately around the blogosphere. I’m starting to take it personally. LOL.
I have to agree with your mom (another Patti–yay!) that more things make you cry as you get older. Susanne mentioned her little girl turning 8. I have three awesome daughters but my baby girl is 21. Talk about feeling older. (note, I said older—not old.)
As for the topic at hand, I have to develop tunnel vision and become a hermit sometimes to get things done and literally avoid the internet except for what I’m working on at the time.
Thanks for the time reminder. Now I better ignore your blog and get back to work. LOL. Just kidding, I have another post or two to catch up on. 🙂

January 19, 2011 at 1:00 pmThat was a beautiful break in my busy day! It is a great goosebumper of a video that really touched my heart on a deep level. Time is such a precious commodity!! We all know it, but crazy how easy it can be to forget every now and then and get all wrapped up in things that are not that important.
You share a great question to help us keep track of our time and keep our priorities in fron of us.. “Is This a good use of my time?”
I am very productive and manage my time well, but there are always times when my focus goes astray and your question is a great one to bring me back!
Thank you for sharing this Nicole, and from the comments, I can see it is a hot topic!

February 23, 2011 at 11:28 amHi Nicole
Great video and puts my time management to shame. I think the original was done by Frank Covey – “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” That’s where the crdit might have to go?
