Great post Nicole,
I’m using other kind of method to make sure the work is done during vacation/summer etc. This method is based on Scrum by taking two boards and divided each of them to three columns: waiting, in progress and done. One board will be for all the home duties and the other for fun stuff. Each kid select X (number of home duties that based on what the family decide earlier) of home duties and when it’s done he can choose which fun stuff he can do on this day.

I very much appreciated your checklist idea. As a stay at home dad and translator I need to find a way to keep 3 younger people in check and I am starting to be fed up with the mess and the focus on movies and games. I am going to try the checklist, thanks!

I’m pretty flexible over the summer, the boys know that if I get my to-do list checked off during the week I’ll take them to the movies or to do something fun on the weekend. Sometimes if they’ve been extra helpful or awesome we’ll go out for ice cream or italian ice in the middle of the day just because.

Even during the school year there are always teenagers hanging out at the house, I like your house rules on the door idea and I might need to do that for the summer.

I’ve been doing a lot of cleaning and organizing and getting rid of stuff lately, from emails to pics to physical books to clothes, etc. Tonight (this AM! Ack!) I’m cleaning out my Amazon wishlists which have accumulated way too much stuff. I found in there a book that looks great and that I meant to at least buy for my daughter, if not all my kids. You are SUCH a great mom! I love your lists! I love Khan Academy and codeacademy and I looked over the FLVS site and that is just an awesome resource and I can’t believe it’s free – that is wonderful!

One of my all-time favorite books is Jonathan Livingston Seagull. I first read it as a child and have read it several more times. It’s awesome for all people – of all ages! Heck, now I want to go dig in my storage room and find it to read again myself! 😉
