You've heard of websites that publish lyrics to common songs, right? Well, today I discovered Misheard Music Lyrics.

It all started, innocently enough, on Facebook. My husband said “Come look at this.” Since he was at the computer, it was safe to assume that he meant “I found something funny.”

So I came over to see what he was up to.

He said “You know the Pearl Jam song, Yellow Ledbetter, right? Nobody seems to have figured out the real lyrics. And Eddie Vedder hasn't released them. So, this guy put together a video of what he THINKS the song says.”

And, then he clicked play. I laughed my butt off.

Here it is…

“Potato Wave” is my favorite part.

So, anyway, after that, I did some searching for misheard lyrics. I found a few sites and also an author who's published a series of books of misheard music lyrics, as you'll see below.

Is this a profitable niche?

Well, maybe. I think it could be profitable as part of a greater niche, for sure. The competition doesn't appear to be nearly as strong as in other niches I've researched (as far as their profitability). But, the number of searches doesn't appear to be very high for either “misheard lyrics” or for it's fancy name “Mondegreen” – yes, there's an official name for Misheard Lyrics. Who'da thunk it?

So, what are the lessons that I learned from this niche?

1. Viral video marketing works. I loved that video and here it is on my blog.

2. Perhaps adding this niche as a small part of one of your existing sites could help to draw traffic to that site. I don't think I'd set up a site strictly on this topic, personally.

3. While funny is good and it can bring traffic, it doesn't always make money.

4. This may be a cool way to make some money on Zazzle as a t-shirt seller if you use your creativity.

What is our weird niche this time? Well, it's not quite as weird as some we've had in the past, but it did make me shake my head.

It's premade peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for people too busy to make their own… I think?

Can't quite figure out the niche for this one other than it's convenience foods taken too far.  Call me old-fashioned, but I don't get it

I'm a fan of Smuckers Jams, but this is just ridiculous, in my opinion. But, I'll set my opinions aside and we can just analyze this niche and figure out why people are buying it. And, how it got into all of the big grocery chains.

Business Lessons Learned from the Frozen PB&J Niche:

1. Convenience sells.
   Obviously there is a market for convenience. I can see the appeal of having all of your groceries in one box. There have been times when we've run out of jam or bread and needed to run to the store, but still. ..
2. Americana sells.
   PB&J is American history. (It's like apple pie and baseball.) The tradition of mom making a pb&j for you with love every day and putting it into your lunch box with a little note. Oh, wait. Uhhh.. that's not what's happening.
3. Once again – Don't overcomplicate things.
   In your quest for a way to make money in business, obviously it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to make a pb&j, take off the crusts and stick them in a box in the freezer. Just do it!

Yes, I'm being a little sassy today, but that's because I think some things don't need to be convenience'd up for you. Did you know that you can also now buy hard-boiled eggs (yes, pre-cooked) in the store. I understand wanting to have a hard-boiled egg handy, but really? And, the rice in a bag? Next thing you know you'll find pre-peeled bananas and sliced apples. Oh wait.

Anyway, we're talking about Peanut Butter and Jelly today and so I did a little keyword research for you.

Keyword Research for the PB&J Niche:

I ran a bit of keyword research and I found over 750 keyphrases using “Peanut Butter Jelly”.  Surprising? Yes!

Now, not all of these are money-making keyphrases, of course, but it's interesting none-the-less.

During my research I discovered that most people were searching for the song “Peanut Butter Jelly Time” and the accompanying dance. lol. See below for the dancing banana that started the craze.

• peanut butter jelly ring tones

Then, another chunk of the keyphrases were for recipes, of course. People want to make foods (and drinks) with peanut butter and jelly.

• peanut butter jelly martini – YUM!
• peanut butter and jelly and bacon sandwich – (Remember the posts about Bacon products? Weird Niche: Bacon)
• peanut butter jelly wings (Yes, really)
• peanut butter jelly cookie recipe

And, some of the terms that people were searching for were for gifts, oddly enough.

• peanut butter jelly t-shirts
• peanut butter jelly gifts
• peanut butter jelly necklace (go figure)

So I did a little snooping around the ‘net to try to figure out what the heck the “PB&J gifts” were.

What is our weird niche this time? Well, it's not quite as weird as some we've had in the past like Edible Insects or Pet Wigs

So, I hope you won't be disappointed that it's not weird enough.

But, this niche is such a clever one and solved a big problem for me, so I thought it worthy of Weird Niche Wednesday.

You see, I have two dogs – Einstein and Eddy. And, I love them very much. They are both goofy as can be and are total opposites.

Here's my Einstein trying to learn chess when he was a puppy:

I would show you a picture of Eddy but he's afraid of cameras. Go figure.

So, as I was saying, they are complete opposites.

Eddy is afraid of the water, but Einstein LIVES to swim in the pool. The only bad part is that he gets dry skin from the pool chemicals. So starting around March when the pool gets warm enough that he can get in (and I can handle the cold water he shakes off on me), he gets itchy from the chlorine.

So, he scratches. And, he scratches. And, he scratches.

Which isn't a huge issue, and we do treat it. But, it DOES become an issue from about midnight til 6 in the morning when I'm trying to sleep and I can hear his tags.

Now, I'm a very very patient person, but sleep deprivation is an ugly thing. Ask anyone who's ever had a baby, and you know that there gets a point in your sleep deprivation where you question your sanity and then you go past that and you decide you don't really care whether you're sane or not, as long as you can just get a solid 3 hours of sleep. Then you start to think that going crazy might be nice because you'd be able to sleep in the hospital. (oops. Is that TMI?)

I figured, as any rationale person, that there had to be a solution to this problem at the pet store. I couldn't be the only person who had an itchy pet that wore id tags, right?

So, I looked. And, I looked. And, I looked some more. No luck.

Then, finally, I found it:

It's nothing more than a little pocket of waterproof material with long velcro straps. But, I would have easily paid $30 for it!

I bought it back in June and I love my stupid little dog tag pocket thingie. God Bless the folks at Quiet Spot for their brilliance.

So, what are the business lessons today?

Business Lessons Learn from the Dog Tag Silencer Niche:

1. Find a problem that people have and offer a solution and they'll pay for it!
   I gladly paid for it. Heck, if that thing wears out, I'll buy several more – just to make sure I've got some on hand. I do love my puppies, but I also love my sleep.
2. The pet industry is one of the biggest ones out there.
   If you love animals, then don't go into the “make money online” niche or the golf niche just because you think you should. People spend money on their pets. LOTS of it.
3. Don't overcomplicate things.
   These people sewed up a simple piece of fabric with velcro on it. If you have an idea for solving a problem, don't overthink it. Just DO it. You can help people. The people at Quiet Spot have.

I've been enjoying summer vacation. However, apparently some of you are missing me. Here's a sample of my inbox the last few weeks since I've been slacking  –

“Nik, where's Weird Niche Wed?”

“When's your next podcast coming out? (Tap, tap, tap.)”

It's good to be loved – even if it means I have to get back to work. (Yeah, right. As if you can even call this work.)

So, I'm back and it's Weird Niche time again, my friends. (Cue applause.)

If you're new here, let me explain what Weird Niche Wednesday is. I look for niches where people are trying to make money online (or off), in weird ways or by selling some pretty unique (corny, bizarre, freaky) stuff.

Nothing above PG-13 rating, but you'll discover, as I have, that there are lots of “creative” people out there.

We've had some doozies in the past –

• Underpants for your Hands
• Edible Insects
• Farting Dogs
• All Things Bacon
• Cat Butts

What is our weird niche this time? 

Owl Pellets.

But, guess what? I thought that “Owl Pellets” was Owl Poop – and so I wrote this ENTIRE blog post about Owl Poop (and it was REALLY funny). But, then I learned (from Mark Mason) that owl pellets are actually Owl Vomit.

Science lesson of the Day: Apparently, since Owls don't have teeth, they rip up their prey, digest off the meat, and then throw up the hard bits and feathers and fur that aren't as  easily digestible. (Gag!)

And, apparently people buy it!

So, while this post is not a total lost cause, all my “poop” jokes are wrong! You could say that I had to “regurgitate” this blog post. (I know, bad. lol!)

ok. Back to Owl Pellets.

First, I'm guessing you'd like to know how it's delivered. (I wanted to know.) Here's how it's shipped:

Let's dig into this weird niche a bit more.

From the website above, you discover that it's  not quite as weird as it sounds. It's actually “EDUCATIONAL Owl Vomit”, to be precise. Teachers buy these balls of stuff and the kiddos dissect them in class (hopefully finding bones and things) in an effort to study the food chain and learn more about birds of prey.

RE-ENACTMENT OF ME READING THEIR WEB COPY:

“These 1.5 inch or longer Barn Own Pellets are perfect to illustrate the nature of food chains”.

1.5 inch or longer. Check.

Food chain. Ohhhh… (Light bulb.) Check

“”only the largest, Department of Agriculture approved, heat-sterilized (no odor) pellets”

Largest. Check. (As if they needed a USP.)

Not stinky. Check.

“each unique in size, shape, and contents”

OMG. Now I'm getting a bit queezy. Too much info for me…

I THOUGHT this was going to be the kicker for me.

“Owl Pellets are in short supply at this time. If you must have your pellets for an event on a specific date, please call to check availability.”

Obviously when I thought “pellets” were poop, I wondered if there was an owl constipation problem that I wasn't aware of. And, I can't help but think of Wedding Favors when I hear “If you need them for an event on a specific date” – but I'm sure that's not what they mean.

But, then I almost fell out of my swivel chair when I saw…

“Warning. Choking Hazard – Small parts. Not for children under 3 years.”

eek. I wouldn't recommend giving balls of vomit to any child young enough to suck his thumb or who doesn't understand the concept of “It's THROW UP. Don't eat it!”

So, after reading about this, as any good affiliate marketer would, I ran over to Amazon to see if they have any Owl Pellet items (to see if it's a larger niche than I suspected) — and DO THEY EVER!

So, what are the business lessons today?

Business Lessons Learn from the Owl Pellet Niche:

1. You CAN sell just about anything on the internet and profit.
2. You can niche bodily waste down further than even I imagined.
3. It's easier to sell something when deemed educational than just gross.
4. Obviously this is a market that reaches both teachers and homeschooling parents. Double profit.
5. If you happen to have an owl in your barn, you might consider making money by collecting the owl pellets (since it is apparently in demand).

And, the big lesson -there is money to be made online – in tons of niches that you've never probably considered. After doing some research, it appears that this niche is searched more than I suspected. I ran some keyword research and I found over 450 results!

Let me preface this note by saying I used to think there was no such thing as a dumb question -and then I taught high school English for a few years and realized that is not true! With that said, here’s my comment/question…

I am a T-O-T-A-L newbie to this whole world of niche marketing, web site marketing, and SEO keyword-rich writing – so when you write to do the niche search and blog about a product that maybe not that many people have already written about (so that you can get a high ranking on it when people search for it on google,right?) – the whole point is that…because of your high ranking, more people then go to your blog, read it, and click the link to the actual product, buy it, and hence… affiliate marketing?

Is that the process?

It's good for your stress levels, your health, and your business. Amazingly, even a fake laugh has health benefits.

Here's a Weird Niche combined with a Motivational Monday for ya. A Dr. has formed “Laughing Clubs” to help improve the world – one giggle at a time.

Take 5 minutes to laugh — it'll improve your day.

Don't forget that the other big thing you can do to improve your mood, your health, and your overall productivity is exercise. Take a walk. Go skating. Have a quickie with your significant other. Turn on your favorite 80's tune and dance. Grab a hoola hoop or a jump rope. It doesn't matter what you do — just get a move on.

Day Clocks

Now, my mom, who is the mastermind behind Remarkable Wrinklies may have a good market for this, as I'd imagine that many retired people don't need to keep tabs as closely on which day of the week it might be, compared to someone who is running kids around to different activities on a daily basis.

So, tapping into the ‘elder' market is one use for this product.

However, I think it's even cooler for vacation rentals. If I rent a cabin in the mountains for the week as I've been known to do, I tend to lose track of the date. So, while a calendar is helpful to some extent — I can see having one of these Day Clocks on the wall as a real boon — in the boonies.

What smart marketers they are to be using YouTube to get the word out about Handerpants!

This is certainly a video that not only informs but also entertains.

They talk about WHO their target market is in the video – although I'm not sure they've quite narrowed it down enough yet!  If you watched the video, you get my drift – Stone Masons, the Elderly, Graphic Designers, and Hobos, are just a few. I sure hope you've narrowed down your target market more than they have!

On their website, they list the features of Handerpants although, any good copywriter knows that you should list benefits along with the features.

Then, the coup de gras – the end of the website lists several uses for Handerpants. BRILLIANT! Whenever inventing a new product, sometimes it's essential to train the public why they must have it and what it's used for. Educate them so they consume your product and buy more. I'm sure, although Handerpants are durable, you occasionally need to replace them when they wear out.

Takeaway notes from Handerpants:

– Video is a highly powerful marketing tool.

– Humor is a viral marketing tool. It helps spread your message faster than boring marketing does any old day.

– Sometimes you have to train your customers why they need your product. For instance, I never would have thought about buying Handerpants for doing Jazz Hands. Thank goodness they told me that. Now, I need at least 2 pair. lol!
