Hi all! As you may know, I have the attention span of a gnat. (Make that a gnat on speed.)

This uhhh… “attribute” of mine makes video training courses, no matter how good they are, impossible for me to consume for two reasons.

I usually won't even start watching the darned video, because I know it'll take an hour of my time.

If I do attempt to watch a webinar replay, my mind typically wanders as people talk slower than I think. This means that I don't absorb the material, anyway, because my brain is off making my shopping list.

Problem? Solution.

Here's a quick three minute video that shows how I speed up videos so that they keep my attention.

The course that I'm currently taking is the Ultimate Social Challenge, and you can learn more about it here: Ultimate Social Challenge Bonus.

Yes, I get the irony of making a video for people who hate watching videos. lol. I didn't miss that one.

So, just in case you REALLY hate videos, here's a quick step-by-step for you.

How to Speed Up Videos

Step One: Download the video that you want to watch.

Step Two: Begin watching it in Windows Media Player.

Step Three: Right click on the video screen. You'll see this:

Step Four: Choose “Play Speed Settings”. You'll see this.

Step Five: Slide the bar to where you can mentally keep up to the sound, but are challenged to do so. (This point will vary, depending on the speaker's speaking pace.)

Thanks for coming by. Please let me know what you think about videos in general. Am I weird?

Have a beautiful day!

Warmly,
Nicole Dean

PS. Despite the fact that the Ultimate Social Challenge is being delivered via video/webinar, I am learning a lot. The live case study is what I'm enjoying the most. You can still join me here (and get my notes): Ultimate Social Challenge Bonus.

Hey guys and gals.

Just in case you haven't seen the hullabaloo about YouTube.com – I'll update you.

YouTube is an entertainment site. It's owned by Google.

Google is an advertisement site. They make money through advertisements.

YouTube is a free video site. It's also high page rank and gets a lot of traffic – which means that spammers went crazy putting crap on there along with advertisements for their own products and services.

Google decided they didn't like giving free advertising to people on YouTube. Which I can totally understand.

So, they started banning accounts – even legitimate ones – if their videos were promotional in nature or talked about making money online.

Since Google is the boss when it comes to YouTube, their opinion is the only opinion that matters.

You following so far?

So, how do you protect yourself?

Make sure that you're not using the terms “Make money” in either your titles or your tags. If you are – then change those, pronto. Also, read their terms of service regularly in case they change.

Understand that your goal isn't to try to game Google. (You try to game Google, and you'll lose every time – eventually.) It's about playing by the rules.

The only problem is that you can *THINK* you're playing by the rules and still be cut – if Google disagrees with you.

So, just in case… you should also do these two things.

Submit your videos to other sites, too.

Make sure that you have backups of ALL of your videos. Get it organized now.

Here's how to get your videos from YouTube if you need to do it.

Login to your YouTube account.

Go to “My Videos”

In your list of videos, there's a dropdown box. Click it and you'll see “Download mp4.”

Do that for any videos if you don't have copies of them.

Note: It appears that you can only download 2 at a time and then you have to wait awhile. I think they're protecting their bandwidth.

So – go through your files on your computer first. Locate any that you're missing and just grab those few.

I hope this saves some of you some heart-ache.

Hugs,
Nicole Dean

PS. This doesn't just apply to YouTube.com. If you've got 100 articles submitted to EzineArticles.com – I'd have those backed up, too. If you're doing a BlogTalkRadio.com show – I'd have backups of your episodes, too. I would not trust any of your content that you care about to 3rd party sites. Back that up!

But then my husband made a hilarious video for our son's 14th birthday using XtraNormal Movie Maker last week, so I thought I'd play with that just to see what would happen.

Here's the final product… I decided to pick on my good buddy, Willie Crawford, a bit. (He loved it! lol) Who knew he had moves like that? lol

Let's talk a little today about time.

I found this video back in September 2009 and I enjoyed it so much that I copied it over to save in my blog. I had it saved in my hundreds of drafts and just rediscovered it today.

It continues to “wow” me.

One of my most favorite sayings that I repeat to myself on a daily basis is

“The days are long but the years are short.”

I wish I knew who to credit it to.

That simple 9 word sentence reminds me to avoid letting the “feel” of having endless time during the day allow me to watch years pass by without having made the biggest and BEST impact upon those around me possible.

How are you using your milliseconds today to make an impact on those around you? What are you doing today to make the web and the world a better place?

And, at every moment of the day, remember to ask yourself “Is this the best use of my time right now?”

For instance:

If you're sitting on the floor playing peek-a-boo with your toddler, the answer is a resounding “YES”.

If you're working on something that directly makes you money, the answer is probably “yes”.

If you're wandering aimlessly on YouTube, Facebook, or are playing Farmville, the answer may be “no”.

Regrets suck. At the end of my life, I hope to have as few as I possibly can.

Please share your thoughts.

Warmly,
Nicole

PS. Also think about this video. If you can create a video like this that touches people, it could be a heckuva marketing message, too.

Friday is the “freebie” day where I give you free content that you can use on your blog. Hurray!

Today, I'd like to talk videos. Did you know that it's super-easy to embed YouTube videos onto your blog? That didn't use to be the case.

While, I don't want to encourage you to add video just to add video, it can certainly add value IF you can find a channel with helpful, expert videos (like mine – hint hint). If so, you should do it!

<del>Here's how easy it is:</del> (Actually, it just got easier. See below this video.)

The new easier way that was brought to my attention by Scott of Scott J. Smith is below.

View the rest of this post here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Embeds

So with that method, you just copy and paste the URL of any YouTube video or Vimeo video into your blog and then make sure it's on it's one line.

I tried it, of course, before I posted here. It works.

If you'd like to grab ANY of my YouTube videos, you can get them here:

Nicole Dean's Awesome YouTube Channel <- Click there to grab videos

Or, if you're in a different niche, then look around and find some videos that your blog visitors will love!

I hope you've enjoyed this “Free Blog Content” Friday. I know I have! If you'd like, please share your YouTube channel in your comment below – to encourage my readers to embed your videos.

Thanks, as always, for another wonderful week of fun.

Warmly,
Nicole

Welcome back to Expert Briefs!

I know that the subject of passwords and password management isn't a fun topic, and I know you're thinking “Here she goes, up on her soapbox again, being a Mom” – and you're right.

One more time for posterity.

—– STEPPING ON SOAPBOX —

Have you EVER signed up for an account anywhere online (including signing up for affiliate programs and article directories)? Maybe one or two? Or 200?

Well, if that site gets hacked, it may or may not be a big deal, right?

Right.

UNLESS you're using the same exact email address, username and password on other sites.

If so, you could be in for a world of hurt. That hacker can now use automated software to keep trying that username & password on other sites – where you could also have accounts.

Perhaps you have credit card info stored, your Social Security number, important business contacts, or an established social media presence (like your Twitter account).

So, if he/she hits those accounts, you could lose money, have your identity stolen, turn off a bunch of your best fans, and ruin your reputation overnight.

And, you may not even realize that the first site has been hacked until the damage has been done.

—– STEPPING OFF SOAPBOX —

That's the bad news.

The good news is that it's mostly preventable.

So, the question I asked our experts today is:

“As an online business owner, you must have hundreds, if not thousands of passwords. I sure have bunches.

How do you manage them so that you've got safe (hopefully unique) passwords for each program?

And, how do you organize them all?”

Here are our expert replies on the subject….

Mark Mason of MasonWorld.com says:

Once upon a time, I used the same complicated password on every login. The password itself was secure, but as Nicole has pointed out, the practice of using the same password everywhere is NOT secure. I knew I needed to make a change to lots of different passwords, but I am often on a different computer from where my passwords are stored securely. I have a Windows laptop, an iMac, an iPad and a Blackberry. I access secure sites from all of these systems. So, I decided a long time ago on a “algorithm” for setting (and remembering passwords).

For each site, I create a unique password that is made up of my “private key” (same for every site) plus a unique “site key” (specific for every site). For example, my private key might be “Mark&”. So every password that I have would start with “Mark&”

The site key can be “remembered” by looking at the URL. For example, the site key might always be the first three letters of the site in mixed case followed by an exclamation point. For for nicoleonthenet.com that would be “Nic!”

To get my password for the site, I would simply combine my private and site keys. For nicoleonthenet.com, that would be “Mark&” + Nic!” ==> “Mark&Nic!”

The keys that I use are actually more complicated, but you get the idea. The bottom line is that I always know the password to any website that I visit (if I can just remember the darn user name — LOL).

Shannon Cherry of The Power Publicist says:

I recall the days when all I needed to remember was my Social Security number…. ahh, those were the days.

Today, although I don't have thousands of passwords to remember, I have at least 4 dozen. Combine that number with my mommy brain, I'm lucky to even remember the 9-digits on my Social Security card.

Now although I use a password service which often autofills the information, I found I couldn't transfer that service to another devise. Meaning although my desktop had super password memory capabilities, my iPhone, mini, laptop and other desktop did not. In addition, some of my staff needed many of those passwords too. A password service won't really cut it for me.

So what I did is create what I call an ‘Online Management Worksheet' – with URLs, usernames and passwords. This worksheet is categorized into affiliate programs, websites, productivity tools, and more.

That sheet is shared through a program called Dropbox , which is a cloud storage and automatically updates files on every computer all at once. So no matter who creates a new username/password for my business, everyone is on the same page automatically.

It saves me and my team a lot of time, and as Nicole says, time is our most valuable asset.

Alice Seba of Contentrix.com says:

Well honestly, I don't have a thousands of passwords because I'm always focusing on keeping things simple. I really don't sign up for a ton of services, memberships and affiliate programs. That said, I still have plenty to organize with my shopping cart log ins, cpanel passwords, select affiliate programs and a few other things. You just can't seem to get away from it.

I have heard a lot of great things about Roboform, but I've never been that high-tech when it comes to keeping password records. However, because I heard Nicole uses Roboform and I do a large part of my work on the iPhone, I was prompted to look into Roboform's app.

It's actually pretty cool. The app download is free, is for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and works in conjunction with an online Roboform account. With it, you can:

* Access Roboform Datafiles in your account
* View log in identities safe notes
* 1 click log in using “Login” button
* Fill in forms with Matching Passcards
* Sync between online account and app

But funny enough, with the app I have to memorize a user name, password and 4 digit PIN to use the app. I guess it's a small price to pay for all the remembering the app does on my behalf.

And, here's my 2 cents. I wrote this before reading the others just to make sure I wouldn't let their ideas sway mine.

Nicole Dean of .. here! .. says:

I've already shared my thoughts on the importance of password safety above. (To sum up: It's important!)

“But, Nik”, you're thinking, “how do you manage your passwords?”

Well, I'll tell you. I've used a few different password management tools over the years and they've all worked well, to an extent, but they'd only help so much.

Essentially, we usually have four pieces of data required for each account:

login page

email

username

password

and if any of those four pieces of info was missing, it would eat up my time.

(And, as Shannon so brilliantly said, time IS our most precious asset.)

The biggest problem for me was the time involved in each step. Let's say I'd get an email that said “You need to log in and update your paypal info to get paid on your affiliate commissions….” but it didn't say where or how. That's when the trouble started.

First, I'd have to track down the log in pages. (WHY do people hide them so well?)

Then figure out my usernames. (Which, are often different.)

If I couldn't guess my username, I'd try to recover it.

But, if I didn't remember which email address I'd used, I was stuck.

And, that's all before I got to the password part of things.

So, I'd get very frustrated. And it wouldn't take much, because, as my husband says, I have the attention span of a gnat. So anything that I am stuck on for longer than about a half a second feels like an hour. (It's not pretty.)

The tool I ended up choosing (and have used for awhile) is Roboform. I was using a free program, but it actually got corrupt and is now unreliable or I'd recommend that one, too, even though it isn't as powerful.

I recorded a free video that you're welcome to watch to learn more about how Roboform works, and to see it in action on my computer. While I isn't perfect, it's good. (I'd be lying if I said any program is perfect.)

Here's the video and there's my referral link under it to try Roboform free –
