I need to give a shout out to my Mom from Remarkable Wrinklies for this week's Weird Niche Wednesday

She was hanging out on StumbleUpon, probably finding a funny new cat blog to read, and ran across this.

Inflatable Thanksgiving Foods!

Every table needs an inflatable turkey, for … something? Unfortunately, they're sold out!

Inflatable Turkey for the Holidays

So, you'll have to wait until next year to get your inflatable turkey for the holidays.

Luckily, they seem to still have inflatable Fruitcakes in stock. I'd never eat a REAL Fruitcake so this looks just as good to me.

Grab your Inflatable Fruitcake Here!

Here's another classic video from Archie McGee:

Grab your Inflatable Fruitcake Here!

Review of this Niche:

If I'm drowning in the middle of the ocean, please toss me a blow-up turkey or a fruitcake, but, otherwise, they probably would end up in with the beach toys here. (Imagine the weird looks we'd get from the seagulls flying by).

I'm a big fan of Archie McGee. In fact, you'll probably find that I've featured them more than one. Remember the Handerpants?

So, what do you think of inflatable food? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Warmly,
Nicole Dean

vicque Says: November 23rd, 2009 at 8:20 am
Let me preface this note by saying I used to think there was no such thing as a dumb question -and then I taught high school English for a few years and realized that is not true! With that said, here’s my comment/question…

I am a T-O-T-A-L newbie to this whole world of niche marketing, web site marketing, and SEO keyword-rich writing – so when you write to do the niche search and blog about a product that maybe not that many people have already written about (so that you can get a high ranking on it when people search for it on google, right?) – the whole point is that…because of your high ranking, more people then go to your blog, read it, and click the link to the actual product, buy it, and hence… affiliate marketing?

Is that the process?

Post Script: This is also my first time on your web site! Though I somehow found a link to your interview with Lynn Terry a few days ago and enjoyed it very much!

Hi Vicque-

You want to know if I have a method to my madness?

My marketing strategy.

My strategy is this.

– Generate Buzz marketing (people love the goofy posts and pass them around like crazy)

– Relationship building and Branding (again, being me and getting people to know me and remember me)

– Occasional promotions in the posts like to the NicheResearchPacks.com at the end.

– The opportunity to analyze other business models and critique websites with my readers.

I make occasional sales of the products mentioned through affiliate links, but the posts are more for generating fans than sales. You'd probably think it odd, but when I showed up at the NAMS Workshop in Atlanta you'd be amazed how many people said “You're THAT Nicole Dean – the Weird Niche lady!” So, I guess it's working. lol!

You asked about my SEO strategy?

Well, for Weird Niche Wednesday, obviously I do not get highly targeted traffic from the search engines. My target audience for my blog is internet marketers, and people who want to make money online.

So, when people find me through bizarre terms like “bird diapers”, it doesn't make sense, right?

In fact, here are some actual keyword terms from my traffic stats for this month:

naked people duvet covers

meat rugs

wigs for dogs, cats, and birds

people that look like kenny rogers

cat butt magnets

breaking dishes

plastic turkey wishbone

So, no, I don't expect someone who searches Google for any of those terms to come and find me and be a perfect fit.

However, I do know that I get hollered at on Twitter if I miss posting my Weird Niche posts on Wednesdays, so my fans have spoken.

I hope that makes more sense.

Hope that helps!
Nicole Dean

The Topic for this week's Weird Niche Wednesday is – PLASTIC Wishbones!

You read that right. Turkey Wishbones made of plastic. Go figure.

In case you're unfamiliar with the significance of the Turkey's wishbone, it is tradition at Thanksgiving in the US to play a game with the wishbone. Two people hold onto the Turkey Wishbone like the picture above, and pull until the wishbone breaks. The person who ends up with the larger piece gets good luck.

So, now that you know the significance, the need for a plastic wishbone makes sense, right? Yeah, I didn't get it either.

After much thought, I still couldn't pin down the ideal customer –

Was it for people who loved Thanksgiving so much they needed it year round?

Was it for Vegetarian kids?

Or maybe for people who are REALLY competitive and needed a “do over” because they lost at the wishbone game the first time around?

Or for a loved one who needs all the luck he/she can get?

I didn't see the need for the “faux” wishbones at first, but was then enlightened…

I read a bit further on the site and had my “ah-ha” moment. DUH! I should have known. My mom had 10 brothers and sisters. So, needless to say, Thanksgiving had like 40 people and two turkeys – so there were only TWO wishbones. There were definitely more than 4 of us kids around who wanted to get our hands on those wishbones when they'd dried out and were ready. If only we could have ordered more!

Problem? Solution.

Now you can order more wishbones at: LuckyBreakWishbone.com

The lesson here?

The lesson for this week's niche is that opportunities are all around us every day. I could do an entire series just on Turkey niches, I'm sure.

Or, if we wanted to go back to discussing dog flatulence — I'm sure I could find additional related opportunities in that niche for you, too.

The point is that opportunity is all around you. This clever business person took an idea, wrapped some really cool branding and an awesome story around it. (Read the FAQ page on their LuckyBreakWishbone.com site for fun. It's highly clever.) Incorporate humor and human into your business and people WILL remember it — even if you're not selling something as clever as plastic turkey wishbones.

I'll be back with more Weird Niche Wednesday in a week.

Warmly,
Nicole Dean
