I know you'll enjoy her post — and I know you'll LOVE the offer she has at the end of this post! Read on for more!

Learning about Blogging from the Olympics

by Lain Ehmann

Seeing the recent Olympic acts of derring-do brings to mind tales of athletic accomplishments of days past. And for me, I can't think about the Olympic Games without thinking of the most incredible Olympic victory of all time.

Yes, that's right – I'm talking about the incomparable (and fictional) male-male pairs figure skating team of Michaels and McElroy memorialized in Blades of Glory, starring Jon Heder and Will Ferrell in Paramount's 2002 comedy. Next to them, Comaneci, Torres, and Phelps are mere footnotes in Olympic history.

If you're not familiar with the story, the two are originally individual male figure skaters, but due to an unbridled rivalry, they get barred from the sport. Both hit rock bottom, but after a visionary coach sees their potential, they join forces for the first-ever male-male figure team. I won't ruin the tale for you, but suffice it to say that after hills and valleys, and challenges both internal and external, Michaels and McElroy emerge triumphant, with gold medals in hand.

Of course, being an internet marketer, I've got to find a way to relate this story to online business. Never fear! I've got you covered. In particular, the Dynamic Duo can attribute their success to three principles that online business owners and bloggers can learn from:

1. Get a coach. If it weren't for the foresight, dedication, and experience of their coach (played by “Coach” himself, Craig T. Nelson), Michaels and McElroy would never have made it out of the practice rink. Their coach led the way to success, helping the two sidestep possible problems, overcome challenges, and shortcut the learning process. The same is true for online entrepreneurs! I personally can attest that my online business coaches (of whom Nicole is one!) have cut YEARS off my learning process. I would never have made it to six-figure status in 18 months without their assistance. I counsel my readers to get a coach, or flail. It's that simple.

2. Make it about the audience. Not until Michaels and McElroy give up their selfishness and focus on wowing their audience do they truly become gold-caliber competitors. Too often, I see bloggers and website owners refuse to make changes to their business — or their blog — because they're focused on themselves rather than on their audience's experience. From hard-to-read fonts, to an unfocused blog post, to tweeting about their cat's breakfast… the focus needs to be on your audience, not on you and your personal preferences. Sure, you can run your business according to your choices, but don't be surprised if your readers and customers give their business to someone a little more concerned about them.

3. Maximize your “secret sauce.” The most remarkable this male-male duo had going for them was their physical strength, so they designed a routine that made the most of this element. They performed feats that male-female teams couldn't begin to dream about, and it made them stand out against their competitors. I encourage my clients to identify their “love potion,” the thing that will distinguish them from the rest of their market make their target audience fall in love with them. Without a distinguishing characteristic, you become a commodity, interchangeable with your competition. From mad technical skillz, to charisma on-camera, to an off-kilter sense of humor, what's YOUR secret sauce?

Finally, a parting note… After they performed, Michaels and McElroy left their audience and the judges with a clear sense of what's next — to give them the gold medal. There was no question about “where to click,” “what to do,” or “where to go now.” Are you leaving your blog readers with the same sense of direction? Let them know what to do and how to do it, and then be prepared to take your spot on the winner's podium.

About Lain: Lain Ehmann created a six-figure online business in the scrapbooking industry in just over 18 months. She shares her secrets as well as interviews with other successful online business owners at http://www.businesslovepotion.com.

But WHAT the heck is NAMS? And, who is it for?

The problem is that the benefits were not clearly stated on the sales page – as far as what members actually receive.

So, I recorded a quick video to share the “behind the scenes scoop” as to what you actually get as a NAMS member. JUST the 30 information-packed webinars in the members' area alone are totally worth joining, in my humble opinion.

Check it out here:

If you have ever thought of joining, go to this page to see what's included. (I think you'll be shocked!)

ok, but who should NOT join NAMS?

1. If you're spending and spending and not actually taking the time to learn the material and implement. Then hold off for now and please don't sign up. (Go through what you've already bought first.)
2. If you do not wish to be any of the following: an affiliate marketer, online business owner, information marketer, or blogger. (Then it's not a good fit.)
3. If you're just wanting to throw up a bunch of quick websites and watch the easy money roll in. (That's not quite how it works…)

Is NAMS perfect? The Be-All End-All Solution You Need?

Nah. There are definitely things I'd improve, but David is working on a lot of that behind the scenes – like organizing the tons of content on the site so it's easier to navigate.

It is, however, a place that I trust to send my own mother. And there aren't a whole lot of those places online.

I have a cool marketing quiz for you to see where you can improve *your* business.

I personally believe that our business is only as strong as our weakest link. (Just one more reason to outsource to someone better than us at doing certain tasks.)

So I think this quiz can really help you to find out what your weakest link is so you can tackle it in 2012… and win.

You do not need to enter your name or email address to take this marketing quiz, so be completely honest and you'll get personalized feedback.

You’ll find the marketing quiz here:
Click to Find out your Marketing IQ Level – and How You Can Improve It!

The free quiz is a precursor to show you how joining NAMS can help you, whether you’re a beginner or even a more advanced student like I am. (I learn a bunch EVERY time I go!)

The questions are:

1. What's your online business experience?
2. Do you have a niche?
3. Do you have a website or blog?
4. Do you get traffic to your sites?
5. Are you building segmented lists?
6. Do you sell other people's products online?
7. Do you sell your own products online?
8. Do you have multiple streams of online income on a regular basis?
9. Do you work too hard on each of your sites every day?
10. What's your current income level from your online business?

There are 4 options for each from “No” to “Sometimes” to “Occasionally” to “Always”. You'll get a rating back (again, anonymously) – with advice for each of the questions above, based upon your answers. I hope you like it and it helps you to get a clearer picture of where to focus in 2012.

Here's the link again:

Hey guys and gals.

I've begged. I've pleaded. I've jumped up and down waving my arms and screaming.

But, still … you're not listening.

Another of my dearest friends suffered because she wasn't using a separate and unique password for each and every site she signed up for.

The hacker got hold of one password and used that info to get access to her domain registration. He took her main domain.

So, once again, I hate to be a pest but I'm going to be one anyway. Because I HATE to see good people suffer. It really makes me angry and sad.

One more time for posterity. Here's how you're at RISK.

—– STEPPING ON SOAPBOX —

Have you EVER signed up for an account anywhere online (including signing up for affiliate programs and article directories)? Maybe one or two? Or 200?

Well, if even ONE of those sites gets compromised, it may or may not be a big deal, right?

Right.

UNLESS you’re using the same exact email address, username and password on other sites.

If so, you could be in for a world of hurt. That hacker can now use automated software to keep trying that username & password on other sites – where you may also have accounts.

Perhaps you have credit card info stored, your Social Security number, important business contacts, or an established social media presence (like your Twitter account).

They now can lock you out of your own accounts and at least with Gmail, it's VERY difficult to get it back. Plus, if they get your Gmail account, they'll also likely get your YouTube account if they're connected. (Another reason to backup your YouTube videos.)

So, if this person hits those other accounts, you could lose money, have your identity stolen, turn off a bunch of your best fans, and ruin your reputation overnight.

And, you may not even realize that the first site has been hacked until after the damage has been done.

—– STEPPING OFF SOAPBOX —

That’s the bad news.

The good news is that it’s mostly preventable.

I’ve already shared my thoughts on the importance of password safety above. (To sum up: It’s important!)

“But, Nik”, you’re thinking, “how do you manage all of those passwords? It sounds like a lot of hassle to have a different password for every site!”

Well, I’ll tell you. I use a tool to handle it all for me, of course. Otherwise, it would be a mess.

I’ve used a few different password management tools over the years and they’ve all worked well, to an extent, but they’d only help so much.

Essentially, we usually have four pieces of data required for each account:

login page

email

username

password

and if any of those four pieces of info was missing and I had to look it up, it would eat up my time.

The biggest problem for me was the time involved in each step. Let’s say I’d get an email that said “You need to log in and update your paypal info to get paid on your affiliate commissions….” but it didn’t say where or how. That’s when the trouble started.

First, I’d have to track down the log in pages. (WHY do people hide them so well?)

Then figure out my usernames. (Which, are often different.)

If I couldn’t guess my username, I’d try to recover it.

But, if I didn’t remember which email address I’d used, I was stuck.

And, that’s all before I got to the password part of things.

So, I’d get very frustrated. And it wouldn’t take much, because, as my husband says, I have the attention span of a gnat. So anything that I am stuck on for longer than about a half a second feels like an hour. (It’s not pretty.)

The tool I ended up choosing (and have used for awhile) is Roboform. I was using a free program, but it actually got corrupt and is now unreliable or I’d recommend that one, too, even though it isn’t as powerful.

I recorded a free video that you’re welcome to watch to learn more about how Roboform works, and to see it in action on my computer. While it isn’t perfect, it’s good. (I’d be lying if I said any program is perfect.)

Here’s the video and there’s my referral link under it to try Roboform free –

If this tool looks like something that can help you in your business, here’s the link to try it…

Click Here to try Roboform Free!

Members at my site IncomeCPR.com (no longer active) get a monthly lesson about making more money with their infoproducts. And, they also get to ask questions about the monthly lesson.

The topic of running an affiliate program comes up often – probably because I'm so experienced as an affiliate manager.

Here's an excerpt from the Q&A report for this month. I hope you enjoy it!

“Nicole, With the first lesson on Affiliates I have a question.

I am starting an internet marketing site and will be creating a business PLR site as well as a tutorial type site for businesses. Should an affiliate program be set up each separately?

I would also like to have an affiliate website but I don't want one for each site (i think that would be too much to handle). What would be the best way to organize these?

My Response:

I have separate affiliate programs for EasyPLR.com versus my other courses for two reasons.

I may decide to sell EasyPLR.com in the future. If so, I don't want it tangled up with the rest of my business. I want a clean and clear sale. And, I want to be able to show that the profits from EasyPLR.com were exactly $X/month to a potential customer. That would be hard to do if it were inter-meshed.

I don't want confusion on the part of my customers as to their rights. I tend to attract a lot of newbies to EasyPLR.com. So, if they buy one of my “non-PLR” reports, I don't want any misunderstanding. Like to find someone taking a report like this one and copying pieces on their blog. This way, it's very clear which stuff of mine HAS PLR rights versus which only has personal rights.

As to how to organize it?

That's a really good question. Take a look at my affiliate center ILoveMyAffiliates.com. It's not a perfect solution, but you will notice that each page has a “signup” and “login” section.

Depending on what you're using to run the two programs, you could keep all of the tools in the affiliate management program and just send people directly to that section. You'll see that I do that for my JustAddSweat.com stuff – I just send them to my affiliate center that's built at JustAddSweat.com rather than trying to list everything in the general area.

I hope this helps if you're facing a similar decision.

Warmly,
Nicole Dean

People ask me all the time what I actually spend (invest) my money in my business. Yes, a lot of marketers say to buy, buy, buy — but on what?

Since I just finished my taxes for last year, I thought it might be helpful if I shared where my money went. (Yes, I'll also share soon where it comes in from, too, but I'll save that for another day.)

This is where my money goes in my business… (I'll be updating this if I find more regular payments.)

I'll start with Recurring Payments for Tools that I Use.

Domains.

I'm down to about 90 domains. (I used to be a domain junky, but am streamlining much better now.) Obviously that can get expensive, especially if you're adding any privacy or extras to each domain you register. I get a discount on my domains since I'm considered a high-end user, but still pay around $7/year.

I use GoDaddy.

Website Hosting.

I have several hosting accounts. I don't like to have all of my eggs in any one basket.

Mom Webs is where I refer people who are totally new to online business. I've been a customer – and am co-owner of Mom Webs and have been for years. They're used to handling support from scared new online business owners. Highly recommend.

Host Gator is the other company I use. They're solid and I've been a customer of their for years, too. I like that they're a Green Hosting company.

You can't go wrong with either choice.

Autoresponder.

Your autoresponder will maintain your lists for you, and help you to actually earn cash when you need it.

Aweber – The service I’ve used since 2005 to manage most of my newsletters, ecourses, and ezines. (If you get emails from me, they probably come through this list managing service.)

Shopping Cart.

If you want to have affiliates promote your products then you'll need a shopping cart of some sort.

I use a few.

1ShoppingCart – this is the cart I use to run EasyPLR.com. It IS 1shoppingcart. Just a reseller name. I’ve had an account with since 2009 and love the flexibility.

Clickbank – Clickbank’s Publisher Program. (This is the easiest option.)
Plus: Easy Click Mate – If you use clickbank, this is a really great tool to create an affiliate center. I use both for my YummyPLR.com site and my JustAddSweat.com site.

Project Management.

If you work with service providers, this tool can be very helpful to manage your team.

Basecamp – Allows me to track projects and who is working on each one.

Computer Backups.

You NEED offsite computer backups if you're running a business. Backing up to CDs or DVDs or an external drive is not enough.

Mozy – Keeps my computer (and therefore, my income) safe. (Try it free.)

Audio Recording for My Podcast & Storage.

I record all of my podcasts on the telephone. You can record using Skype, but I just prefer using the phone so I can walk around and handle things while I'm doing interviews. (Like letting the dogs out, checking on the kids, etc.

Record Audio (the simple non-techie way) – Quick and easy way to record audio from your microphone or telephone and put it on your computer. No techie stuff involved. This is what I use to record my podcasts.

Telephone.

I don't have a separate business line yet, but will be soon. However, I did find super-cheap phone service that I've been using for a few months and I like it.

My Phone Service. It's like Vonage but much (much) cheaper.

Here are the One-Time Payments for Software and Tools.

Password Protection.

I highly recommend you use unique passwords for everything. Don't use the same password for your email as you do for Twitter and your autoresponder. I suggest using different ones for everything – and I personally do that. How? Glad you asked.

Password Manager Program – Keeps track of all of my logins, usernames and passwords, so I don’t have to. (Try it free.)

Where Else Does My Money Go?

Other Software.

I'll oftentimes find a plugin or new piece of software that I'll grab to test it out. If I like it, you hear about it. If not, you don't. (Most, you don't because it's just not worth the learning curve.)

Partners.

I love to partner with other business owners who have strengths different than mine. In fact, I taught a course on the topic a few years ago. www.EasyPartnerships.com Good stuff.

So, I send money to my partners each month based upon our profits.

Affiliates.

Of course, I pay my affiliates each month. That's a payment I'm thrilled to pay. It means I made more money than I would have alone!

Outsource Expenses.

I hire Virtual Assistants, Graphic Designers, and Writers for my business. And I have an Accountant. So, obviously I pay them each month.

Travel.

I make more money EVERY single time I go to a live event, whether I'm speaking or just going there to hang out. Want to meet up with me? Here's where I'll be next. (Coming soon.)

Advertising.

I've started to advertise more. Obviously the goal of advertising is for it not to end up as an expense, but it does require initial output so I'll leave it in the expenses.

Learning.

I'm always learning. (And, yes, I invest in courses, too.) One of my favorites right now is this Private Newsletter.

I hope that snapshot helps you get an idea of what I consider important in my business.

Warmly,
Nicole

PS. Yes, of course, there are affiliate links in this list.

Choosing your Target Customer

I've been noticing some extremely clever businesses lately and I decided to spotlight them, on occasion, and try to pick apart what is making them successful while others close up shop in their first year of business.

The example today is Sport Clips.

The hair franchise “Sport Clips” opened here in Pensacola recently. They only take male customers. You might think “Well, then they're cutting out 50% of their possible clientele. True. But, they have targeted their store to appeal towards men (specifically men who like sports), so, rather than trying to “kind of” get it right with 100% of people, they're knocking it out of the park (pun intended) for male sports fans.

Check this out – their mission:

At Sport Clips, It's Good to Be a Guy

At Sport Clips, we've created the perfect place for a guy to get great service and a great haircut. Our mission is to create a championship haircut experience for men and boys in an exciting sports themed environment. Stop in today for the ultimate just-for-guys haircut experience!

The Atmosphere.

They have a big screen TV in the waiting room – tuned to ESPN. The store is set up like a locker room. It's clean and masculine. No flowers or fluff, anywhere.

The service.

Their service menu is tailored to guys.

My 13 year old son got the MVP treatment and loved it. He said it was the best hair cut he ever had – and I don't know if he even looked in the mirror. He just enjoyed being a “guy” and getting the hot towel treatment and the scalp and shoulder massages.

Their Products.

Their Product Menu is …All for guys, too. It makes it much easier to decide WHAT to offer when you know WHO your target customer is, right?

Product Line Up

Sport Clips is proud to offer the finest products in men’s grooming. We’ve partnered with Paul Mitchell, American Crew, and Nioxin to provide men with a wide range of quality solutions for their unique lifestyle needs.

Efficiency in Hiring.

Another huge benefit is in hiring and training. It's much easier to train stylists on ONE type of client than to try to please everyone who walks in.

Marketing Clarity.

It's more efficient. Your marketing message is loud and clear. People know what to expect when they walk in the door. It's brilliant.

Let's apply this to your online business.

Have you really (*really*) figured out who your target customer is yet? It may change over the years. Mine has. But, it's essential that you know who you're talking to.

If you're a VA (Virtual Assistant) or Ghostwriter – who is your ideal client? Authors, Speakers, Chiropractors, SEO Experts…

If you've created a book or ebook – is it “Cooking for Everyone” or “Gluten Free Cooking for Moms That Even Your Kids Will Love”?

If you've started a coaching business – is your program “Lose Weight in 30 Days” or “Pregnant Moms – Lose Weight 30 Days Postpartum”?

If you started a PLR site – is it “all things plr” or are you specializing to one type of person?

If you put together an ecourse – is it “the one secret everyone needs to know about marriage” or “the one thing Christian women need to know about marriage”?

Some questions to ask.

Who is the person?

How old is he/she?

What does he/she value most?

What are their problems, concerns — what keeps them up at night?

These are all things to consider when creating products, services, putting together a coaching program, starting a podcast or blog, or writing a book.

Who is your best customer? And, how can you BEST help that person to succeed with whatever it is you specialize in?

That, my friends, is what I want you to think of today.

Questions, comments, observations? Please share.

Warmly,
By Susanne Myers from AffiliateTreasureChest.com

A few days ago Nicole invited me to share some of my big takeaway lessons from 2010 with you. One of the things that made the biggest impact on my online business was decluttering. Not only am I more profitable (which is nice), I’m also a lot happier and less stressed without all the extra sites, lists etc. to worry about. That’s why I’d love to share a little more about decluttering your online business with you so you can make this the most profitable year for your business and most importantly improve your quality of life – since that’s why we started these businesses in the first place.

Take Inventory

Start by getting a better picture of all the different little parts of your online business. What websites do you own, what domains? What products are you promoting as an affiliate? What products do you have that you’ve created yourself or have resell rights to? What PLR is collecting dust on your hard drive? What lists do you have and how are you doing about following up with those lists and monetizing them. What other income streams do you have?

Take some time to answer those questions. In fact, I recommend you take out a notebook and write them down. It’ll help you determine what pieces of your online business are worth keeping and what parts are ready to be pruned off.

Where’s The Money

Next it’s time to take a look at what sites, lists and products are currently the most profitable. Chances are that if something is already making you money you can spend a little more time and effort on it and make even more.

At the same time keep an eye out for things that can be a bit of time sucker but don’t really make you much money. This could be a newsletter you spend a lot of time publishing that doesn’t really pay off as well as you’d hoped or it may be a time intensive membership site you are maintaining. It could also be a site you’re updating regularly.

Don’t forget about mental clutter. I had several sites in the past that were making a little bit of money here and there, just enough to pay for hosting. I wasn’t spending any time updating them, but they were always in the back of my mind and kept me thinking that I should do something with them to make them truly profitable. It was mental clutter that kept me from focusing on more important parts of my online business. I ended up selling a few of the sites and giving some away or closing them down.

It gave me a lot of focus and clarity getting rid of some of these sites. The same holds true for lists and products by the way.

Where’s The Love

Of course money isn’t the only thing to consider. You should also be doing things you love to do and work and what you enjoy. Take a look at the projects, sites, products and lists you have left and strike a balance between things you know will be profitable and things you know you’ll enjoy working on.

Time To Declutter

Now it’s time to sit down and make a list of what you should keep, what you should expand upon and most importantly what you should plan to get rid of this year. Here are the types of things you want to look at:

Domains – Decide what to keep, what to let expire and what you could potentially sell.

Websites – Decide which ones to keep, which to close down, sell or give away.

Lists – Decide what lists are worth keeping updated and which ones to delete.

Products – Decide what products you should continue marketing and which ones you should retire or turn into free giveaways.

Of course, you won’t get all of this done in a matter of days. For now, come up with a plan, and then take care of what you can right now (deleting lists or not renewing domains for example). Then work on a few of the other things at a time over the coming months.

And now I would like to invite you to visit my blog AffiliateTreasureChest.com where I write about all things affiliate and internet marketing. Take a moment to sign up for my blog updates and let’s make 2011 our most profitable year for our online businesses.
