It’s another Expert Briefs, where I ask really smart business owners to answer your burning questions.

This week I asked our panel of experts…

Do you partner in your business – like long-term JVs?

If so, any horror stories or tips for success?

Let me have it.

I think you'll enjoy the responses.

Connie Ragen Green of Affiliate Marketing Case Studies says:

I had partners during the years I worked in real estate, but now I prefer to only get involved in joint ventures. I define a JV as a business relationship based on a specific project, with a definite start and end date.

These have worked out extremely well for me and I continue to look for new joint venture partners as my business grows.

Karon Thackston of Step-by-Step Copywriting Course says:

Christine Cobb and I have a site we co-own. We started it back in 2010 and have really enjoyed working with one another. It's great to have someone to brainstorm with (not just about our joint site) and to do the things I don't like/want to do.

One of the things that plays a big role in Christine and I getting along so well is that we bring different strengths to the business relationship. What she's good at, I stink at and vice versa We each have something valuable to contribute. We also both have thick skin.

If she doesn't care for something I've written or doesn't think it will work, she tells me. (Politely.) If I'm not big on the way she has something set up to operate, I let her know. (Gently.) There's a great deal of mutual respect involved.

I have been involved in other short-term JV relationships where the other party didn't do hardly anything she was supposed to. It's no fun to be stuck holding the bag and having to do everything yourself. Later, that person expected to be paid for doing nothing.

I think the moral of the story is to know (or get to know) the person you're about to partner with. Make sure you are compatible with your personalities, talents, skills and work ethics or it could turn out to be a situation you wish you would have avoided.

Absolutely, without my partners I have no idea where I'd be.

I've been enormously blessed with great partners. There are many aspects to a partnership dynamic but for me, the biggest thing is honesty. Not just being truthful, but being forthright – even when it is painful.

Years ago, while we were all together in a project, Kelly McCausey and Alice Seba sat me down to discuss my performance on a presentation I'd just given. It was awful. Both the presentation and the meeting after.

In the end, it only made me respect and value them so much more; Knowing they'd give me the truth whether it is what I want to hear or not. In return, I'm prepared to give the partnership 100% when working on my portion of things.

I don't do very many long-term partnerships, because I was burned early on in a few.

One of my ongoing ones has been with Glenn Livingston. It has been awesome. There are two big tips I could give here.

1. Only partner with someone you'd trust with the keys to your house.

The best quality of a good partner is someone you can trust. I'll often do short-term partnerships first and those eventually morph into longer run deals as the trust is built up over time. Even the best contracts won't make a dishonest person someone you want to deal with.

2. Partner with someone who adds value to your life.

One of the projects Glenn Livingston and I did came together because I mentioned that if someone combined Glenn's research skills with my copywriting skills, they'd be downright dangerous. We created the Total Conversion Code together.

It was very profitable for both of us, but what was even more valuable was the skills we both picked up in the process. Both of us have become conversion experts from filling in our weak links.

I've no horror stories and after all these years and the different projects I've partnered on, that's a blessing. I've never been horribly let down, stiffed financially or left holding the bag. I have good relationships with every person I've ever partnered with… in fact, I'd partner with any one of them again if the right project presented itself.

I like that my main business is just me. I'm independent and enjoy working on my own most of the time, but, I love to have side-gig partnerships going on around me too.

A few reasons why:

* I feel more driven to meet deadlines when a partner is waiting on me.
* I'm always learning something new from one of my partners.
* My partners introduce me to cool new people I might not have met on my own.
* Partners can cover for each other when life gets crazy.

And hey, sometimes it's just plain more fun to work with other people.

My partnering success tip would be to be open to your partners' ideas.

If you take on a partner, but then want to keep doing everything the way you've always done it – you're missing out and probably will end up frustrating the other person. Partnerships are amazing opportunities to try new things so shake off the same old attitudes and go for it.

I have had a lot of partnerships over the years. Just counting quickly I can think of 10 different people who I’ve partnered with over the years.

Some of my partnerships have been AWESOME.

Most have been positive.

A few have not. (I have several grey hairs from one partnership that went south.)

A few years ago, I was much more open to partnerships.

While I am still open to a win-win (or I’d be silly not to be), I’m definitely more hesitant to get into a partnership now than I have been in the past. If I have an idea for a project, I’d usually just create it myself, use my own team, and/or get an intern to help. That way it’s part of my core business.

The number one thing I look for in the people who I want to work closely with?

Well, there are several, but the one thing that is absolutely a must-have is someone who has proven to show respect. (Sing it Aretha! R-E-S-P-E-C-T Find out what it means to ME!)

I always tell my kids that the one thing in life you have to learn is respect.

Respect for yourself, including your health and wellbeing and your future.

Respect for others, including their feelings.

Respect for property, both our own and others.

Respect for the environment.

Just respect.

Anyone I’d partner with would have to show respect for themselves, respect in their business, respect to customers by providing quality (no shortcuts), respect to others in their field, and respect to me. It’s kind of a broad answer, but it’s just an overall feeling you get when you meet someone. If they are backstabbing people or putting out shoddy products, I don’t really want to be associated with them. If they aren’t showing me respect, before we even partner, then I just can’t partner with them.

A business partnership (or even hiring someone) is very much like a marriage in many ways. If the trust gets lost… it’s very very hard to ever get it back. If there’s an uneven feeling in the relationship or one person feels the other isn’t treating her or their business with respect, then it’s never going to feel “right”.

Examples?

As for right now, I'm only in a few long-term partnerships.

My most active JV's at the moment are –

CoachGlue.com – a project that I created with my good friend, Melissa Ingold, and I'm really excited about it.

MomWebs.com – a web hosting company that I co-CEO with Kelly McCausey that specializes in helping moms get their blogs online to share their message with the masses.

What about You?

Talk to me. Any tips for my readers? I would love to hear what you think about partnering.

Warmly and with big hugs.
Nicole Dean

Today, I want to talk about something that I've been thinking a lot about lately.

My mom has a blog and also does work as a Virtual Assistant, and so we talk a lot about business. Awhile back she asked me “How do you just know everything?”

The truth is that first of all, I don't. lol. (Obviously.)

What I DO know, though, is where to find the answers to any questions that I may have. And find them fast.

When I need answers, I have a few options. We all do, right? For instance, I could buy an ebook or course to find the answer.

But, that's not where I turn to figure out something when I get stuck.

At this stage in the game, I have access to a bunch of friends on Skype who are top business people, of course. But I can't just bug them all the time. So, I also have three networks of people to turn to for help.

I'll do a little compare/contrast for you to see if you want to tap into those same groups that I do. All three have LONG-TIME members which shows that the communities are valuable and people are getting results. (Not like other places that I won't mention where you've got bad advice flying around at light speed from people that have no business giving advice.)

1. If You Are Not Making Consistent Money Yet in Anything Other Than Providing Services, Start here.

If you're a VA or Ghostwriter, I'd definitely recommend this one as your first stop.

The place where I cut my teeth online is still hugely valuable and active. The forum there is crazy busy and it's a safe place, and is really perfect if you're still not making consistent money yet.

Here's the link: Click here to check it out

The forum is run by Kelly McCausey and Melissa Ingold who are both active in there.

The community is mostly women and also includes a 12 year old girl who is a Kindle author – but we are getting more men these days, too.

I try to stop by regularly. BUT – I don't read through all of the posts. So, if you sign up and ask a question there that you want my feedback on, just shoot me a Private Message and I'll take a look at it.

See? I was just on there yesterday. (click the pic if it's too small to read)

Here's the link again:
Click here to check it out

2. Recommended for Bloggers and Beginners who Have Chosen a Niche and are Ready to Make Better Money.

If you've got a blog and are headed in the direction of profit, but are just running into questions and don't have a place to ask for help, I would recommend this community as there is a wide variety of people who are there to help (and are good people):

Click here to check out this group.

If you join this site, you also get access to ongoing training, which is a huge benefit. I'm a member of this group, as well. The forum isn't as active as the community above at the moment, but there are definitely people who stop by to lend a helping hand. And, as with the others, if you join and post a question and want me to take a look, just DM me the link to the question and I'll see if I can help.

3. Recommended for Intermediate and Advanced and Those Looking to Connect with Successful Marketers.

If you're not in the beginner stage in your business, there's another place to go with good people and solid advice.

I just joined this group today, at the pushing of a friend, and after poking around the forums for only a day so far, I can see that people who I respect are posting. There are also very strict “must be nice” rules in place, and I see the owner is very very actively involved. (All good things.)

You can check that one out here:
Click here to check out this Group

This third one is also a great network to join if you want to connect with other successful business owners (which is another reason that I signed up).

4. Another Option, if You're More Private.

Of course a fourth option is hiring a business coach so that you can just ask him or her for assistance when you run into problems, but the other groups are usually more affordable.

However, you may be like a lot of people, and you don't want to publicly share problems you're having in your business.

In that case, you might consider looking for a business coach.

If so, I can recommend Kelly McCausey, especially if you're still trying to figure out who you are in business.

Click here for Kelly McCausey's Coaching

I also take on just a handful of clients. To work with me you've got to have at least one infoproduct under your belt OR have a very clear path of who you want to help with your online business. My strengths are in multiplying your existing business, not in being a guidance counselor.

You can see my coaching here:
Check out my coaching here.

How about You?

Do you have a question for me about choosing a community or about any of the groups above? Let me have it.

Thanks, as always, for reading.

Warmly,
Nicole

I had some graphics created to help motivate you, and I thought I'd share them one at at time here.

The first one is all about competition.

I know, personally, if I'm too worried about what other people are doing, it means I'm not paying enough attention to what I'm doing.

I used to let this paralyze me. However, over the years, some of my biggest competitors have become my best friends.

I am usually one of their top affiliates, as well. I know my people buy from my competition whether I like it or not. By embracing it and endorsing them (through my affiliate link) – I get to earn money from that – without having to do the work.

That's all I have to say about that. If you like this, please share.

Have a GREAT day!

Warmly,

Hi and welcome back!

I was talking with my mom this weekend and she was absolutely bursting out with excitement because WisconsinMade.com tweeted her on Follow Friday.

See?

Mom is now a totally loyal affiliate of theirs for life. (Also referred to as a Raving Fan.)

How did this all happen?

1. Mom applied to become an affiliate and started promoting Wisconsin Made – which you can see on her blog sidebar here:

See it live here: RemarkableWrinklies.com

2. She then blogged about their “Fight Breast Cancer” promo this month:

You can see that one here:
Raising Money through Food Gifts

So why 3 Cheers for WisconsinMade.com?

At some point in this process, the PR and Social Media Specialist for Wisconsinmade.com, Amanda Maurer, reached out to mom about doing cross blogging between RemarkableWrinklies.com and Edible Antics. (Bravo #1!)

Also, during this process, Tiffany Strey Kloss, their Affiliate Manager, personally communicated with mom to see if there was anything mom needed help with. (Bravo #2). As a former affiliate manager for 4 years, I can tell you this makes a HUGE difference in loyalty.

Then, on Friday, mom saw the Tweet that I posted above. I'm not sure who posted it, but whoever did – that's Bravo #3.

And, of course the Packers won yesterday so… lol. oops. Got distracted there for a minute.

So, what can we learn from today's Marketing Monday?

1. Mass communication is important, but it's the personal communication that can impact on an individual level.

2. It doesn't take much to make people feel special. When's the last time you've retweeted something nice that someone has said about you? Are you socially bookmarking blog posts that people write about you? (Do you have Google Alerts set in order to KNOW when people are talking about you?)

3. Offering something unique makes you the only game in town. WisconsinMade.com speaks to loyalty amongst cheeseheads like us – and makes me want to do some Christmas shopping!

I hope you've enjoyed this!

Warmly,
Nicole Dean

PS. If you want to know how NOT to motivate affiliates… see below. UG.

Kudos again for WisconsinMade.com for showing us how TO do it the right way!

Hi! I just sent this to my affiliates and wanted to make sure you didn't miss it. I'm running a BIG affiliate promotion, and am giving away Flip Mino digital video cameras to all affiliates who make a certain number of sales.

… Here's what I sent …

Raise your hand if you like cash and prizes.

I thought so.

I originally just planned to give everyone who earns at least $50 in
affiliate commissions during the month of January a $25 bonus.

BUT, my friend said that wasn't ENOUGH of a motivator for him,
so, how about this, too.

EVERYONE who earns at least $100 in commissions will get a
Flip Mino (digital video recorder).

In fact, you'll get this one:
http://bit.ly/5MDdWQ

UPDATE: SEE COMMENTS BELOW FOR ADDITIONAL INCENTIVE!

Rules (subject to be modified)

Obviously orders through your own links won't count.

Anything that's suspicious will require a waiting period to make sure the orders are legit.

The Flip Mino will be sent to affiliates in the US and Canada for sure. However, I have to look into the feasibility in other countries. If you live outside the US and Canada, you might get the cash equivalent. I'll update you on that in another email. Fair enough?

If you prefer an Amazon gift card so you can get a different prize, I can do that ($100 value)

Yes, of course, you will get BOTH the $25 and the Flip (or equal value) when you earn the $100 in commissions.

Please note: This is $100 in commissions, not sales.

ok. Soooo… how do you rack up sales?

Well, we have articles & videos to make promoting EasyPLR.com easy.

Simply grab the embed code from YouTube, post it to your blog
and add a call to action underneath with your affiliate link.

Here are the videos available:

What is PLR?

Is it Ethical to use PLR Content?

How to Avoid Bad PLR Content

When you grab the embed code, make sure to UNcheck “Include related videos”
so you don't lose traffic through other people's videos.

I also found a few resources that I'd like to share. I think they could
help your affiliate marketing efforts.

Interview with an SEO Legend

Thanks so much. I appreciate you greatly! Have a fantastic weekend!

So, that's the scoop. Let me know if you have any questions. I hope to give away a LOT of cameras next month.

One very useful method of marketing is commenting (or interacting) on popular blogs in your niche. You simply find a few blogs that have the readers that you want, and start leaving helpful comments on the new posts.

Benefits of Commenting on Blogs:

Leaving comments on blogs is a worthwhile activity as it provides several great benefits:

– You can get more incoming links to your blogs, which the search engines love.

– You can get the readers of the blog to click through your links, which is always good.

– You can get the attention of the blog owner, which can help you to network with him/her in the future.

Of course, we don't want to run around willy nilly spamming blogs with our marketing message. As we've discussed, there is certain Blog Commenting Etiquette that applies, too.

Selecting Which Blogs are Comment-Worthy:

If you're in the internet marketing or affiliate marketing niche, you're in luck as I have a shortcut. My good friend, Doug Champigny posted 20 Must Follow Blogs for Internet Marketers in 2010 this month.

Imagine my surprise when I realized my blog was listed. I was, of course, honored to be on the list, but I also liked how he grouped the blogs by certain criteria (as you'll see below). I asked him if I could reprint the list here with my 2 cents added. Of course, being the great guy he is (and knowing the value of getting free exposure) he said that would be just fine.

Important Sidenote:

But before I give you the list, I have to make an important point.

We are all limited in time. Obviously. In number of hours per day and number of days on this earth. I teach how to be efficient and effective marketers, so it would be hypocritical of me to tell you to comment on all of the blogs listed below every day… unless you really wanted to and enjoyed it. Therefore, I recommend choosing just a few of your favorites and keeping up with them. Try to be one of the first to comment when a new post is published so that all of the other commenters have to pass yours to leave their remarks.

ok, so which to choose? The blogs are grouped below as follows:

Group

Is “DO follow” Installed?

Is Comment Luv Installed?

One

Yes

Yes

Two

Yes

No

Three

No

No

In case you're new to the concept of “Do Follow” – it's a good thing. However, I wouldn't recommend deciding whether or not to comment on a blog that you love based on whether or not it has “do follow”.

The same with Comment Luv. While it's a nice plugin, I would recommend that you link to deep posts in your blog when leaving comments anyway, not just to your main URL.

So, here's Doug's list, and it will be followed by my additional thoughts.

Group One (Do Follow & Have Comment Luv):

My Opinion?

Well, you may or may not be surprised, but I would recommend ignoring the groupings entirely and choose a handful of the blogs above to comment on regularly based upon MY criteria.

– Relevance to your market. If you're a copywriter, then choose the blogs above that are most likely to attract your perfect client.

– Voice and personality of the blogger. For instance, there are a few bloggers who I wish I could understand, but their communication style is just not in sync with mine. I honestly can't enjoy their writing because the discussions there get way too deep. (I'd rather be making money than analyzing some minuscule details about making money.) I know… there I go with the common sense, again.

– Ethics & Philosophy of both the blogger and the readers. Many marketers recommend products that I just can't endorse. Obviously I wouldn't hang out on those blogs and discuss my opinion when it would just make me look like a trouble-causer. Plus, I want to find blogs where I like the commenters. Certain people just attract good people. Those are the ones I want my name both in front of and alongside.

– JV partners and networking. I'd rather comment on blogs that are run by people that I have met in person. It's a great way to stay in front of people who you'd like to build your relationship with.

– Attitude. Where do you ENJOY commenting? I don't give a monkey's butt whether the blog has Comment Luv or not. If it's got the eye of your potential clients and you enjoy the discussions at hand, that's where I'd recommend spending your time.

Yes, I'm all about the SEO, but I'm more about enjoying my days. And, on that note, I sure hope you'll continue to read – and comment here.

Have a great week!

Warmly,
Nicole

Potential.

What is the potential of an object? Well, that depends on your attitude.

You may have heard this story before, but it's about a man who traded one red paperclip for a house and how he did it.

Was the paperclip special? Like made of diamonds or with a rare healing power? Nope. It was just a plain old paperclip.

What was special is that the man, Kyle MacDonald, mastered a skill that is highly valuable in business – how to offer a valuable Joint Venture or win-win scenario. It took him a year, and several trades, including a snow globe and a snowmobile, but he did it – and everyone involved was happy. He only made trades that made both parties feel they got a great deal.

Watch this short 20/20 special about his idea and how he implemented it here:

So, what can we take from this?

You are ONLY limited by your own beliefs. If you have something to offer – anything – and you can figure out how to help others, you can do amazing things.

How can you use this information in your Online Business?

– Barter for things you need in your business.
Whether you have ad space, a skill like writing, technical abilities, software, neglected blogs or websites that you can trade, or even courses at your disposal, you have something of value that you can offer.

– Get your affiliates excited about promoting you by offering them a deal they can't refuse.
Think outside of the box and you'll be amazed at how excited people get about promoting your affiliate program.

– Figure out how to get JV partners lined up to work with you.
Why do you think my Blog World Tour was so successful? I came up with a way to get people to feel silly to turn me down. Now, I have over 50 people waiting for me to guest blog on their blogs. I honestly am swamped by number of requests – and it's FABULOUS exposure for me.

It's all about figuring out what you want AND what others want. Then, offering value. What do YOU bring to the table? What “red paperclips” do you have that you can offer to others?

I would love to hear your thoughts below.

Warmly,
Nicole

Last week I talked about how affiliate managers need to realize marketing to women is different than marketing to men.

You may know me as Jimmy D. Brown's Affiliate Manager. It's the best job ever! Although I am not taking any more clients, I get asked on a daily basis for my recommendation for an affiliate manager.

It's been pretty hard to make a recommendation. As soon as I find someone qualified, they get booked and I'm stuck again with no one to recommend.

Not anymore!

If you'd like an affordable (and easy) boost to your affiliate program, here's your chance.

Talk about a hands-free, easy-peasy way to get more affiliates, get your affiliates active, and increase your bottom line. Check it out.

I don't know how long spaces will be available but I’m sure they will fill up quickly if the amount of recommendations I get asked for is any indication of the need.

I am actually going to use the service myself with one of my own programs. Even an affiliate manager by trade needs help sometimes! I'll be back to let you know what I think of the service once I get more into it.

Here’s the link if you’re interested in freeing up your time while increasing your sales. I know I am.

Full Service Affiliate Management Help

Happy Wednesday and here’s to a great rest of the week.

Are you having a relaxing summer? I hope I can pull you out of that beach chair for a minute. You up for it?

Unless you've been spending your days in that beach chair and ignoring your emails (lucky you!) — you know that there have been several massive product launches lately. (One is all about the “secrets” of Traffic… if you know what I'm sayin'.)

It all starts with one innocent little email, then your inbox gets slammed with email after email — all offering the same product. And, they keep upping the ante. It seems like every successful marketer on the planet drops everything to scramble to promote that one product.

Obviously, product launches can bring in oodles of money.

Unfortunately, most people who write an ebook, put together a membership site, or sell an audio or video course and then try to have a big launch are disappointed.

The fact is that the Average person can not pull off a BIG product launch because he/she does not have a network of guru buddies to reach out to. Most people simply would not pick up the phone and say “Hey, (insert Big Shot here), I know you don't know me, but would you please send a mailing to your list about my new ebook? It's really good. I promise.”
