Here’s another guest blog post by my bud, Susanne Myers of Daily Affiliate Tasks. In addition to being one of my favorite people on the planet, Susanne is a successful niche affiliate marketer, too, and is also my mastermind partner.

Turning this over to Susanne. Enjoy her brilliance!

Affiliate Marketing Lessons Learned From The Bowling Alley

By Susanne Myers

Learn Susanne's system here -> Daily Affiliate Tasks

I’m sitting in a bowling alley as I’m typing this watching my daughter and her friends bowl. I know, it’s a weird place to work, but hey … I’m not a big bowler and one of the big advantages of being an affiliate marketer is that I can work just about anywhere. As I’m watching all the fun and excitement here, it struck me that there are quite a few lessons to be learned from bowling.

Lesson #1 – Practice Makes Perfect

Let’s start with the obvious lesson here. The more you bowl the better your score will be. The same holds true when it comes to building and marketing small websites that are monetized with affiliate offers. At first things can seem a bit overwhelming and you won’t always get the results you want. But as you stick with this business model and get better at your craft, it will become easier, more fun and most importantly more profitable to be an Affiliate Marketer. We’re not born with the skill set it takes to make this work, but a little practice each day helps to hone our skills.

Lesson #2 – They Can’t All Be Strikes

Even if you have bowled for 20 years, I’m sure you can’t throw a strike every single time. The same is true in online marketing. Not every niche website you build will be a big hit. Some may only make you a handful of dollars each month; some won’t make any money at all. Not every mailing you sent out to your list will work as well as anticipated. I’ve had some that resulted in only one or two sales… but that’s ok. They can’t all be strikes and if you pay attention to what’s happening and listen to your subscribers, you can learn something from each of those “flops”.

Accept that they won’t all be strikes and move on. Most importantly don’t let this fact discourage you. Keep working away … stick with what you know works and sooner or later, you’ll get that big strike in the online world.

Lesson #3 – The Right Equipment Makes A Difference

Have you ever tried bowling in your street shoes or with a playground ball you had laying around the house … it doesn’t work very well, does it? The same holds true for affiliate marketing. Like in bowling, you don’t need a lot of equipment, but getting the right stuff in the beginning helps set you up for success. Don’t try to build your site on a free platform. Get a webhost, buy your own domain name and start stuff of right. I promise it won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

When you start to build your list, stick with a reputable service like Aweber or Feedblitz. Set a little of the money you’re making aside and invest in new courses and eventually some coaching. Attend some events and conferences like NAMS. Reinvesting in your business is one of the best ways I know to really grow things.

Lesson #4 – Keep it Simple

Bowling is really a rather simple process. You look down your lane and roll the ball, hopefully knocking out lots of pins in the process. There aren’t a bunch of fancy techniques. You just do what works and keep doing it turn after turn. Sure there are some variations depending on what pins you’re trying to knock down, but overall it’s pretty simple and something you can explain to a 5 year old.

Look at affiliate marketing the same way. Sure you could do all sorts of elaborate and fancy stuff, but what works is doing the simple stuff and doing it over and over again. You know that guest blog posts like the one you’re reading right now work to get more traffic to your site and to help with search engine rankings. Sit down and write some of them this week. The same goes for articles… they still work as well. Add more articles and blog posts to your own site, submit some to article directories. Keep it simple and work on what works.

Lesson #5 – You’ve Got To Ignore The Noise

This one isn’t very easy, but I can tell you from experience that you have to work on tuning out the noise, whether it’s the bowling alley noise on your next turn to roll (or while you’re trying to work in this place), or the noise of emails, tweets, and the latest and greatest tip, advice or product offer in the online realm. There will be all sorts of distractions that will keep you from completing the handful of tasks each day it takes to grow your online business.

Don’t let the latest email or webinar distract you from what it takes to grow your site. Yes, there is a time to learn more and implement new ideas, but don’t allow it to take over your entire day. Make a list of things that you should be getting done today, work on those first and then take a look at the other offers, courses and ideas. In other words, don’t get distracted by all the noise around you.

Lesson #6 – Coaching Helps … Or even just a few pointers

Right in front of me a dad is showing his son how to hold the ball and throw it straight down the lane. The little instruction is making an immediate difference in the boy’s score. Sometimes all it takes are a few pointers. Talk to other affiliate marketers, find a mentor or hire a coach. Take a look at some good courses and most importantly apply the tips and strategies offered. Then watch as your own score (your affiliate income) improves.

Members at my site IncomeCPR.com (no longer active) get a monthly lesson about making more money with their infoproducts. And, they also get to ask questions about the monthly lesson.

The topic of running an affiliate program comes up often – probably because I'm so experienced as an affiliate manager.

Here's an excerpt from the Q&A report for this month. I hope you enjoy it!

“Nicole, With the first lesson on Affiliates I have a question.

I am starting an internet marketing site and will be creating a business PLR site as well as a tutorial type site for businesses. Should an affiliate program be set up each separately?

I would also like to have an affiliate website but I don't want one for each site (i think that would be too much to handle). What would be the best way to organize these?

My Response:

I have separate affiliate programs for EasyPLR.com versus my other courses for two reasons.

I may decide to sell EasyPLR.com in the future. If so, I don't want it tangled up with the rest of my business. I want a clean and clear sale. And, I want to be able to show that the profits from EasyPLR.com were exactly $X/month to a potential customer. That would be hard to do if it were inter-meshed.

I don't want confusion on the part of my customers as to their rights. I tend to attract a lot of newbies to EasyPLR.com. So, if they buy one of my “non-PLR” reports, I don't want any misunderstanding. Like to find someone taking a report like this one and copying pieces on their blog. This way, it's very clear which stuff of mine HAS PLR rights versus which only has personal rights.

As to how to organize it?

That's a really good question. Take a look at my affiliate center ILoveMyAffiliates.com. It's not a perfect solution, but you will notice that each page has a “signup” and “login” section.

Depending on what you're using to run the two programs, you could keep all of the tools in the affiliate management program and just send people directly to that section. You'll see that I do that for my JustAddSweat.com stuff – I just send them to my affiliate center that's built at JustAddSweat.com rather than trying to list everything in the general area.

I hope this helps if you're facing a similar decision.

Warmly,
Nicole Dean

A facebook discussion got me thinking about this question “Is it harder to be ethical during a Recession and does it affect the value that you offer”? – Started by Shel Horowitz.

What do you think? Me? I think the two (value & ethics) are separate questions to some degree.

Ethics is something that's at the core of my business during any point in time. I measure that by three gauges:

“How would I feel if this email/video/or discussion were broadcast in front of those I love.” (This includes my kids. Does it represent me favorably?)

“How would I feel to receive this message?” (Would I feel that it was beneficial or a waste of my time?)

“What would I say if my mother or best friend who is in marketing were to receive this message?” (Slightly different from #1 as it's more related to the quality of the recommendation rather than the “gut” feeling of the email.)

If my gut doesn't sit right when asking myself those three questions, then I have to look at why and adjust – fast. OR if I get a queasy feeling after the fact, I need to apologize to my readers if I've made a mistake, either knowingly or unknowingly when I made it.

For instance, I've recently decided not to participate in any more time-sensitive product launches, unless the following three criteria are met:

It's for someone who I know personally and respect.

I have reviewed the product and find that it's useful, valuable, and quality. (Of course.)

I have thoroughly reviewed the sales funnel.

I've promoted a few launches for GOOD products that I felt could really help my readers, but the sales funnels made me personally uncomfortable, so I'd rather lose money than lose my integrity. I can always make more money.

As for value vs. integrity, I think they can go together. A person with integrity would want to offer great value. However, a person can offer value but not have integrity.

Can you tell that I think with my fingers?

ok. Here's what I'm actively working on right now.

I am removing several promotions from my autoresponders that recommended the products or services of people who I have since then found to not be people who I'd have in my home or give money to, myself. Initially I based the promotions on value, but not on integrity. Or, to be more accurate, I didn't have enough information to base them upon integrity.

Now, my decisions are based upon a much stricter criteria than they were previously – only since I have a broader base to pull from now and a better feel for what people are like behind the scenes.

So, to directly answer the question, my instinct during financial stress is to be even MORE protective of my readers, because most of them have less money to invest right now, and I do not want to be responsible for leading them to spend it unwisely. In fact, I try to include a “Do not buy this if… ” disclaimer in my promos if I think a product is only right for a certain type of marketer. My readers have said “I bought this on your recommendation” and so I choose to filter a lot of junk to get them to the best stuff – and more importantly, try my best not to add to their feelings of overwhelm and confusion. Do I always succeed? Nah. I wish. But, I do make my best judgment call at the time.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic. Please comment below.

Warmly,
Nicole

Welcome to another episode of the Online Business Success Cast.

This week, I have the amazing Willie Crawford, with me.

Yes, that Willie Crawford. The very same Willie Crawford who is an icon in the internet marketing world. I've admired Willie from afar for many years and have recently had the opportunity to get to know him and his beautiful wife better at live internet marketing events like his 50th Birthday Bash. We're actually neighbors and live only 30 minutes apart. (Lucky me!)

In the beginning of this interview, I was giggling like crazy because I was so nervous! But, then I got into my groove. I even got a scoop — Willie shared a tidbit that has never been shared in any interview – ever. And, it's something handy to know in case you ever get lost in the woods with him.

The audio recording of our interview is at the end of this blog post. Just look for the “play” button and listen. It’s free! Also, be sure to check out all of the resources listed below.

If you're not familiar with Willie yet, here's more about him…

Willie Crawford was raised on a tobacco farm in North Carolina, living off welfare most of his youth. His family was so poor that he once wore his grandmother’s shoes to school while working to earn money to replace his only dilapidated pair. This built a burning desire in Willie to break away from the poverty and build his own business.

Obviously it worked. Now Willie Crawford is a corporate president, published author, seminar speaker and host, tele-seminar speaker and host, retired military officer, karate black belt, network marketing trainer, and lifetime student of marketing. In addition he has written and published a best-selling cookbook, Soul Food Recipes Learned On a North Carolina Tobacco Farm, and a best-selling inspirational biography, Git Off The Porch.

Willie is now one of the world’s leading internet marketing experts, having spoken at dozens of seminars in the United States, Malaysia, Singapore and the U.K.

Willie has created dozens of information products, written over 1300 articles and 50 ebooks on ecommerce. He’s hosted seminars, and now hosts his own radio show several times per week.

Willie also does a lot of group mentoring at The Internet Marketing Inner Circle.

When Willie is not busy teaching ecommerce online via The Internet Marketing Inner Circle, or teaching local businesses to use the internet to drive more business through their doors, he enjoys deep sea fishing in The Gulf of Mexico… not too far from his Florida home.

Here's a picture of me and Willie together that was taken a few weeks ago at the NAMS: Niche Affiliate Marketing System Conference in Atlanta right after we taught together on a panel about Affiliate Management. You'll notice that cute smiley face in the middle is my bud Lynn Terry who was also on the panel as an expert.

Me, Lynn Terry, Willie Crawford

I think I say this every week, but this is another of my favorite interviews. It's a dream come true!

Be sure to listen to the entire interview. It's another great one.

Here's a question that I get quite often.

Hey Nicole. I bought my ticket for NAMS & Bob's Online Profits Acadamy (or insert event of your choice here). I'm really psyched about going, but I have one thing that's panicking me:

WHAT DO I WEAR?!

Now, that may seem like a silly question to you, but it's really stressing me out.

No worries. I totally understand. You're meeting a lot of people at a live event for the first time, although you may have “known” them online for ages. I stress about this, too.

Here's what NOT to Wear:

Scraggly, worn out, or ripped clothing. Although we live the internet marketing lifestyle, we shouldn't show up at an internet marketing conference in our jammies.

Brand new shoes. Don't break in new shoes at an event. You don't want to be hobbling around, nursing blisters all weekend.

Skinny pants. If you're squeezing into your pants, put them away. You want to be really comfortable sitting and eating with your friends and chatting at meals, not holding in your belly or trying to unbutton your pants while no one is looking.

Provocative clothes. Not the right place or time.

Fancy clothes. Again, the comfort factor is huge at live events. You want to be able to focus on networking and learning, not on whether or not that tag in your shirt is made of barbed-wire or not.

What you Should Pack:

A warm sweater. If you're sitting in the conference room, trying to learn and you're freezing, you'll be miserable. Bring a cozy sweater/fleece/jacket or something in case the room is cold. You don't want your brain frozen.

Comfy shoes. Not that there's a ton of walking involved, but you'll be exhausted physically and mentally from all the fun, so the last thing you'll want is a sore back or tired feet.

What I'll be wearing:

I normally wear jeans or black slacks with a nice-ish shirt. But, I've planned something kind of fun for NAMS and Bob's Online Profits Academy event.

Instead of dealing with the “dangit, I forgot my nametag” and “where do I stick this stupid nametag” woes, I'm buying personalized shirts like these. (Still choosing the exact ones, but they have long-sleeve and hoodies, men and womens, in all sizes and styles.)

Today is Day 8 of the Home Office Workout & Computer Butt Challenge. (<– If you’re just joining us, click here to see what this is all about and what it has to do with Internet Marketing. Please join us. It’s not too late. We’ll be repeating the same exercises starting Monday, so you aren’t behind.)

I'd like to again say “CONGRATULATIONS” to all of you who took action on this challenge!
If you didn't quite do as well as you'd hoped last week, here's what Scott had to say when he and his wife started to workout again after he’d gained 45 lbs a few years back.

Quote from Home Office Quickie Workout Scott:

No matter what challenge and obstacle we were faced with, we always knew that there were many people who have it much worse than we ever will. We also knew of many examples of people who faced greater challenges than we have ever faced and they were still able to achieve their goals.

How could we possibly let our challenges hold us back?

Welcome to Day 6 of the Lose Belly Fat & Computer Butt Challenge. (<– If you’re just joining us, click here to see what this is all about and what it has to do with Internet Marketing. Please join us. It's not too late. We'll be repeating the same exercises starting Monday, so you aren't behind.)

You guys, Scott gave me goosebumps and made me get teary-eyed in this video that he created just for all of us participating in this “Computer Butt” challenge.

Please take a few minutes to watch. If you haven't already noticed, Scott actually wants to make a difference in our lives. He's one of the good guys!

As for next week, I, for one, am THRILLED that we'll be repeating the first week again. Why?

1. I can watch my progress over the entire month as my body gets stronger.

2. I can relax about having to learn new moves and just improve the way I do the ones we've done so far.

If you're not signed up yet, that's GREAT news for you, too.

You can start now and join in on Monday doing the SAME exercises as we are, and join in the challenge without being behind.

We welcome you with open (but sweaty) arms.
