Sounds like a really good book.

My favorite book of that genre is Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl. What that poor man went through (Nazi concentration camp, losing his family, starvation, abuse) and went on to become (respected physician and pioneer) is nothing short of astounding.

2 others that I love are Papillon by Henri Charriere and Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts.

Love books about the courage of the human spirit!
